9 tiny daily habits to improve your wellbeing
Share
When people think about improving their wellbeing, it's easy to assume they need a complete lifestyle overhaul. Social media often makes wellness look complicated, with long morning routines, expensive supplements and hours at the gym. In reality, some of the best daily wellness habits are also the simplest. Small habits repeated consistently can improve your physical wellbeing, support your mental health and help you feel calmer throughout the day.
9 tiny habits you can start right away to improve your wellbeing
- Make your bed each morning: It isn't about having a perfectly tidy home. It's about starting your day with one small achievement, which can create a positive mindset for everything that follows. And when the end of the day comes, you will be pleased you did it.
- Get at least 5 minutes of fresh air: Spending just a few minutes outside each day can help support your circadian rhythm, boost alertness and give your mind a chance to reset. It doesn't have to be a long walk; even stepping into the garden can make a positive difference to your wellbeing.
- Move your body: You don’t need to do a full exercise routine, but just a few gentle stretches or a short walk each day makes a huge difference. All types of movement count – dancing in the kitchen while cooking, playing with the kids, gardening... it’s all good movement!
- Drink 1 glass of water: Swap just 1 cup of coffee, tea or sugary drink for a glass of water. Sometimes it’s easy to forget to stay hydrated, so becoming more aware each day of your fluid intake makes a difference.
- Do something you enjoy: Making a little bit of time for some enjoyment each day can really lift your mood and improve your mindset for the boring stuff. Looking after your wellbeing isn't only about healthy eating and exercise… making time for hobbies, creativity or simply doing something that makes you smile is just as important.
- Connect with someone: Just 1 text, 1 call or 1 conversation. If you live alone or work remotely, it is easy to spend an entire day without a single conversation. Make sure to connect with someone each day, even if it is small.
- Prepare for tomorrow: Choose your outfit for tomorrow, clear the kitchen worktop where you prepare your breakfast... these little things make a difference and ‘tomorrow you’ will be grateful for it.
- Take a mindful moment: After a busy day, you need a moment of quietness to calm your mind. It will help relax your nervous system and encourage a better night’s rest.
- Reduce late night scrolling: It’s a hard habit to break, but scrolling too much before sleep overstimulates you, which can delay sleep and train your brain to stay awake later each night.
Why small daily habits work
Micro habits are more sustainable and realistic which means they become part of your daily routine quicker, without too much effort. That's why small, consistent habits often lead to bigger changes than trying to do everything at once. You don’t have to do all 9
Trying to complete every single one might cause overwhelm, so just pick one or a few to start with and increase them until they are part of your routine.
