What Is Wellness Really? Understanding the 8 Dimensions of Wellness.

What is wellness?

When I used to hear the word wellness, I pictured yoga, meditation and green juices. To be honest, it always felt like something that wasn't really for me.

That completely changed when I studied for my Diploma in Alternative Therapies. One of the first things I learnt about was the 8 dimensions of wellness, and I remember thinking, "Why has nobody ever explained wellbeing like this before?"

I'd always looked at problems individually. Stressed.. I'd think about work. Tired.. I'd think about sleep. Unmotivated.. I'd think I was being lazy. But I never stopped to look at my life as a whole because the truth is, our wellbeing isn't made up of just one thing. It's influenced by lots of different areas of our lives, and when one area starts to struggle, it often affects the others too.

That's why I love the 8 dimensions of wellness framework. It encourages you to step back, review your overall wellbeing and think about the areas of your life that you may not have given much thought to before.

The 8 dimensions

What does each dimension mean?

Social Wellness – Maintaining positive relationships and having a support network, as well as balancing time alone and with others.

Spiritual Wellness – Having peace and inner balance. Living with values and purpose.

Occupational Wellness – Personal satisfaction in your work whilst also maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

Environmental Wellness – Creating spaces that help you feel calm and safe, while also spending time outdoors and connecting with nature whenever you can.

Financial Wellness – This isn't about being rich. It means effectively managing your finances and feeling secure about your future.

Physical Wellness – Maintaining a healthy body through movement, habits and lifestyle choices. Not perfection, just consistency.

Emotional Wellness – Understanding, recognising and managing your emotions in a healthy way. It also means building resilience, practising self-compassion and knowing when to ask for support.

Intellectual Wellness – Continuing to learn, staying curious and challenging yourself in ways that help you grow.

Wellness isn't perfection

The dimensions are not about being perfect, the goal isn't to score 10 out of 10 in every area. It's about being aware of where you might need to focus your energy. As life changes, some areas will naturally need more attention than others.

This is the reason I chose to begin the Sanuva 90 Day Wellness Reset Planner with an 8 dimension assessment because I wanted people to look at their wellbeing differently.

Rather than thinking, "What's wrong with me?"

I wanted them to think, "Which part of my wellbeing needs a little more attention right now?"

From there, the planner helps you set realistic goals and build gentle habits that support each area over the next 90 days.

Your gentle step today

Take a moment to think about the 8 dimensions, which one immediately stood out to you? Which one made you think, "I haven't really been looking after that part of my life." Awareness is often the first step towards meaningful change.

Remember - Small Steps Matter.

Every Sanuva guide is thoughtfully researched and carefully written to provide practical, realistic wellbeing support for busy women. They're designed to help you build calmer routines, clearer minds and lasting habits—without adding more pressure to your day.
